NZ Christchurch IFFR Fly-in Apr 2024

5th – 8th April ‘24

Planes, Trains & Automobiles

A couple of Australian members flew to New Zealand to participate in the April ’24 Fly-in.

Christchurch was a welcoming, green, lush city undergoing a transformation after the earthquake of 2013 and provided our IFFR folk with lots to experience. The accommodation was good and the restaurant / bar, “Bloody Mary’s” was better than good serving great food for our breakfasts and a three-course welcome dinner.

The Avon River running through the city provided an opportunity for us to take a leisurely “punt” up the Avon, also, visiting the magical Botanical Gardens housed on a 50ha site riding on trolley cars with an informative commentary plus flying high enjoying a Gondola ride up the mountain to view Christchurch and Lyttleton from the “air”. We also enjoyed a light lunch cruising on the Kaiapoi River into the Brooklands Lagoon.

Visited FerryMead Heritage Park which had planes and trains on display including a 1943 DC-3 Dakota flown in Antarctica, a Vickers Viscount, part of a Bristol freighter swallowing a Morris Minor and a handful of helicopters plus a Hudson Bomber all under repair. FerryMead was a park shining a light on the heritage of the past with lots of historic buildings and fit-outs representing a bygone era. A church, school, blacksmith and cinema plus a light rail / or tram running though the village; with the historical rail unfortunately not operating that day.

Great food and fellowship over the whole weekend including the Sports Club buffet on the Saturday night and the Sunday farewell dinner at the Thirsty Peacock. So very well arranged by the organisers under trying health circumstances of some members’ wives.
